Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena has rejected a proposal from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) to impose affiliation fees on government institutes affiliated with it, officials from the LG secretariat stated on Saturday. The decision was taken to safeguard students’ interests, as the affiliation fee would ultimately increase the overall fees they pay.
Currently, government colleges or institutions are exempt from paying affiliation fees. Officials clarified that approving GGSIPU’s proposal would have shifted this cost onto students, adding to their financial burden.
“The proposed amendment to Clause 5 of Statute 24 would have required government colleges and institutions affiliated with GGSIPU to pay affiliation fees starting from the 2025-26 academic session. This would have placed additional financial pressures on these institutions, inevitably raising course fees for students. LG Saxena expressed serious concerns about the potential impact on students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds who depend on government institutions for affordable education,” an official from the LG secretariat explained.
The LG also recommended that GGSIPU explore alternative revenue-generating methods to enhance its budget. Under the existing Statute 24, Clause 5, self-financed institutions are required to pay affiliation fees, while colleges or institutions established or fully funded by the central or state government are exempt from both processing and affiliation fees.
